Playing with packet radio in the Bakersfield, CA Area

5/24/2010:

Installed the new 5/8 wave 2-meter antenna tonight.  Everything looks good so far.  This antenna boasts a 6db gain and it's 11 feet up, so it should perform much better.  It's still hooked to the 5-watt transmitter.  Next upgrade will probably be the Yaesu FT-2900 later this summer.

5/15/2010:

TCP/IP is up and running on the station.  Its address is 172.30.0.1 (subnet 255.255.0.0)  No gateway to the internet yet.  I ordered some LMR-400 and will be working to set up a small base station antenna hooked to the Wouxun.  That should give me better range while I save for a 75-watt Yaesu FT-2900R.

5/7/2010:

VHF packet radio station finally set up!  Running on VHF 147.620 mhz, 1200 baud AX.25 from north Bakersfield.  Broadcasting only 5 watts at the moment.  This setup is using my Wouxun UVD1P handheld linked to Mix-W using a sound card.  The tricky part was building the push-to-talk (PTT) interface.. or rather using the right parts :)  I'm hoping to get a decent antenna set up in the near future, then upgrade to a 50-75 watt mobile radio as the base.  The existing setup sends out a beacon every 60 sec.  If you're interested in working packet in the Bakersfield area, look for the beacon or contact me at corvettekenny@gmail.com.
